Paul Valdemar Horsdal, CM born 1 September 1945 in Ottawa, Ontario, commonly known as Valdy, is a Canadian folk and country musician whose solo career began in the early 1970s. He is known for Rock and Roll Song, his first mainstream single. Valdy is the winner of two Juno Awards for Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year, and has received seven additional Juno nominations. His fourteen albums have achieved sales of nearly half a million copies, four of which are certified gold. The Hometown Band was founded in 1975 by Claire Lawrence, a former member of The Collectors and Chilliwack, as the back-up group for Canadian folk artist Valdy. Valdy was a member of The London Towne Criers during the 1960s and subsequently joined Montreal band The Prodigal Sons. He then moved to Victoria, where he worked with various rock and country musicians, including Blake Emmons. When he was 25 Valdy bought several acres of land in Sooke and began farming. He began performing as a solo artist, and in 1972 recorded his Rock and Roll Song on HaidaA&M it became a hit. His music was featured in the 1972 Steve McQueen film The Getaway. The song "Peter and Lou" was written by Craig Wood (2) about Lou & Peter Berryman, as a farewell to his friends when they left British Columbia for Wisconsin. Craig was also a friend of Valdy, who was was recording Valdy And The Hometown Band* - Valdy And The Hometown Band and needed one more song to make weight. This was the song. I knew nothing of this when I bought the record when it first came out and it took another twenty-five years before I first heard the Berrymans. It took me a while longer to piece together the idea that maybe they were the Peter and Lou in the song? So I ran with my hunch and tracked down Lou Berryman (on the phone; the number was in the phone book!) We had a nice chat and she told me the story of the song. Afterwards we had a brief correspondence by (snail)mail. My interest in Valdy has waned over the years but I've become a huge fan of The Berrymans. They used to make an annual concert date about an hour from where I live and one time I brought my copy of the Hometown Band LP with me and they signed it. It's now a personal treasure.
