Very nice mix here that is well worth seeking out. I actually prefer this greatly to Hawtin's later mixes and find this much more enjoyable to listen to. Around this time, a lot of DJs were going for a much more frenetic, pitched-up, banging style, but this mix is more of a mood piece. Sure, some tracks are pretty pounding but the the mix has a good amount of breathing room and often the tempo is probably below 140 bpm. The track selection is excellent and I can't really think of a track I didn't like on the mix. The tracks blend together well also, even if the mix as a whole feels fairly straightforward. For a commercially released mix-CD, this might be one of the best I've heard, but I still think I prefer Hawtin's "Virus" mixtape over this. Try to track down a recording of that if you can.

Excellent mix if quality tunes of that era. I prefer this type of acid laden techno housey stuff and this mix is excellent. Some days I think he took shortcuts with the mix but other days I think he was showing skills, ie, reverb the track and fade it out letting the effects take over for a bit. This shows how early he was into the whole effects and DJing scenario, definitely a timeless mix, make sure its in your collection.

File under "classic". Almost 10 years old and this mix still sounds more exciting than 99% of what's out there. Richie's minimal+funky asthetic was way ahead of its time and undoubtedly influenced an entire generation of electronic music fans, djs and producers. I suspect I'll be nodding along to this in my rocking chair as an old man.

Now 15 years later this one is still a classic. Richie does a great job of stripping down the mixes. I love the basic fades towards the end of the mix... it does justice to the tune selection, which is top notch. Perfect for long car journeys, especially sunny ones.

Though recorded in the studio rather than at an actual live performance, Mixmag Live! comes close to being the equivalent of a shortened version of Hawtin's all-night performances. Consisting of 22 tracks — including a few signature tracks — Mixmag Live! clocks in at nearly an hour, as Hawtin gives each track only a short moment before adding the next, often overlapping multiple tracks. At times the results are mind-blowing, as only the most knowledgeable listener can distinguish one from another, when multiple tracks are layered, or when the next track enters. The abundance of thumping bass beats and body-moving rhythm will surely please listeners who view techno as a means to dancing, but it may be a little too sensory-overloading for listeners accustomed to the calming sounds of other Plastikman albums, such as Consumed or Musik. The highlight of the album comes about a third of the way through, when Hawtin drops a montage of percussive symmetry with the trilogy of 909-driven tracks from the early '90s, "Spastik," "Spaz," and "Helikopter."
