What distinguishes Cest La Vie is Houcks command of his material: theres nothing here that sounds tentative or uncertain. Its like watching one of those games where everything a footballer tries comes off, every nutmeg, every turn, every long pass. Even more than on Muchacho, he sounds like a man capable of mastering whatever he wants. Admittedly, the palette he paints with is one that keeps within the plaid-clad parameters of a certain kind of American alternative rock you wouldnt approach Cest La Vie expecting to be astonished by its sense of adventure. I bought a copy of this (clear) and Muchacho (black) at a recent show. Both have issues, including pops and crackles (even after a good cleaning). Muchacho is especially awful... off-center, has a scratch throughout "Sun Arise," and the entire record has multiple about 2mm wide dimples all over it (both sides). C'est La Vie doesn't have the scratches or dimples, and the mastering at least sounds pretty good, but it's also rather crackly (but not as bad Muchacho). But it's otherwise sloppy; the center hole wasn't even cleanly punched and I had to clear it out with a sharp knife. Guess I need to avoid Dead Oceans (or Phosphorescent?) vinyl in the future, which is ridiculous.

Sadly, the clear edition of this release is off-center on side A. At least my copy is, which means several are likely that way too. Ugh.

The black vinyl pressing is a typical Secretly group noisy job. Mastering ok but lots of ticks and pops across both sides and vinyl has various scuffs embedded in it. Wish these labels would care more about their vinyl.

Unfortunately they are using Independent Record Pressing which is probably the worst pressing plant out there. I've complained to them before and they send replacement copies that sound as bad as the original ones I purchased. It's a shame because they used to press at RTI in the mid 2000s and their vinyl sounded awesome. But they have since switched to cheaper, crappier pressing plants like many US indie labels have done.

If you get the Canadian Orange Vinyl, you'll find it is wildly off-center on side two. You should probably avoid it. I've complained to Dead Oceans.

New reviews of the surface noise / sound quality on this? I'm too cautious about Dead Oceans releases now to be the first one to dip my toes in.

I was also worried about what the quality would be after Muchacho was pretty bad, especially with this one being on clear vinyl. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It sounds very nice and no surface noise at all on my copy. The quality from Dead Oceans has seemed a lot better recently.

My clear variant also sounds great and has no surface noise (full disclosure: I ran it through the spin-clean before playing it).

I 100% agree with Dead Oceans releases, they're iffy for sure. That said, I'm happy to report this copy, the clear varient, sounds great. I was also pleasantly surprised with their pressing of the recent Mitski album. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have pulled the trigger on this.
