Album

Matt Nathanson's 2013 effort, Last of the Great Pretenders, picks up on the glossy, melodic pop of 2011's Modern Love with a batch of catchy, radio-ready songs loosely conceptualized around Nathanson's adopted home of San Francisco. Although born in Massachusetts, Nathanson relocated to San Francisco in the '90s and built his career. Listening to Last of the Great Pretenders, one gets the sense that Nathanson's experiences living in the city shaped his songwriting, and the album comes off as part diary entry, part love letter. Matt Nathanson is an East Coast transplant who writes of his adopted hometown of San Francisco as someone who understands what contrasts can do to a person. He doesn't take anything for granted and finds joy in the things a true native might assume can be found anywhere. The city is the backdrop for all of love's varying situations. Earthquake Weather is likely the happiest-sounding song to start with the line I'd kill anyone who'd treat you as bad as I do. Формируйте собственную коллекцию записей Matt Nathanson. Last of the Great Pretenders is the eighth studio album by American singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson. It was released on July 16, 2013. Last of the Great Pretenders is Nathanson's third album for Vanguard Records, following his 2007 album Some Mad Hope and 2011 album Modern Love. He released the first single, Mission Bells, as a free download to his fan mailing list in March 2013. Last of the Great Pretenders debuted on number 16 on the Billboard 200 for the week of July 29, 2013. Released: Jul 2013. Label: Concord Vanguard. Last of the Great Pretenders doesn't contain any great shifts in style for Nathanson, but it's definitely the most impassioned album of the singer-songwriter's long and winding career. This is obvious right out the gate with opener Earthquake Weather building to a swirling crescendo. The tune is about summer romance in San Francisco, a theme that pops up time and time again, but especially on Mission Bells and the aptly titled Last Days of Summer in San Francisco

I had listened to earlier Matt Nathanson albums and considered him a little bubble gum for me at times. This album is a total musical departure from earlier material. He keeps his sense of humor and emotion and turns this ode to his home town into a harder addition to his catalog. Any fan of his will recognize his pentameter. If you've never been to San Francisco, it will take you on a musical tour of the city. This is by far, my favorite of his catalog and totally worth checking out by any fan of decent songwriting. All silliness aside, Girl In The Kinks Shirt, it is heartfelt and chock full of obvious personal nostalgia that is totally relatable.
