Album

Guitar is a 1988 live album by Frank Zappa. It is the follow-up to 1981's Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar like that album it features Zappa's guitar solos excerpted from live performances, recorded between 1979 and 1984. It garnered Zappa his sixth Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Guitar was originally intended to be a 3-record box set like Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar, but Zappa decided, with this release, to start using compact discs as his primary distribution medium rather. Released in 1988, Guitar may be the most important and ironically one of the least-known entries in Frank Zappa's voluminous discography - which spans over seven-dozen LPs as of this writing. His proficiencies as a composer and instrumentalist have long been lauded. However, anthologies of this nature provide an outlet for the remarkable breadth and depth of Zappa's manual dexterity and improvisational scope, which can now be enjoyed on a myriad of levels. The sequel to Shut Up and Play Your Guitar, Guitar is a two-part collection of improvisations by Frank Zappa, assembled from live recordings between 1979 and 1984. Zappa's bands from this period provides a solid foundation for what is essentially a one-man show, as Zappa carves his air sculptures from fluid, lyrical guitar notes. He knew this: He made it that way. While his peers and contemporaries were incorporating R&B and blues into their psych-out rock 'n' roll, Zappa played around with more esteemed forms of music, including jazz, classical and performance art-based collage. Still, Zappa's music found open-eared audiences among traditional rockers, classical and jazz fans, connoisseurs of outre music and, of course, totally stoned hippies. This is one of Zappa's best from the '80s - a real tour de force of of improvised guitar work. Hopefully the Zappa Family Trust will reissue this as a triple LP someday with the full 2 hour plus CD tracklisting. This original vinyl release sounds fantastic but it's considerably shorter than the CD release.

Unfortunately this is ruined by the disgusting drum sound of Chad Wackerman. Sounds like he is beating PLASTIC. Shame on both Chad Wackerman and Frank Zappa for not forbidding this. Zappa was a digital victim by that time. Playing with new toys like a kid. Wackerman is a supreme drummer and is playing a proper drum set now. But not on this one.

Within the rock gold Frank Zappa as a diverse talent. He was a brilliant guitarist, an unbeatable band leader and an incomparable social satirist. He began in the 1960s as the leader of the wacky avant-rock pioneers The Mothers. His subsequent solo work included everything from jazz rock to orchestral pieces, always with the humor that Zappa's trademark was. He succumbed to cancer in 1993 but the mind boggling fertile workaholic left a immense oeuvre. Genius is a word too often used in pop music, but it has decided on on Zappa
