Essentially Hype is to drum and bass as Afrika Bambaata was to the development of hip-hop. He first became involved in music through the legendary Shut Up and Dance sound system, like many before him his interest growing from physically building the speakers that made up the rig to DJ'ing, spinning reggae, house and hip hop throughout the eighties. Kevin Ford born 1968 in London, better known as DJ Hype, is a British jungle and drum and bass producer and DJ. Hype first became involved in music as a teenager in 1982, assisting PJ and Smiley with their sound system Heatwave in East London, which evolved into Shut Up and Dance. Hype began producing in 1989, engineering and co-producing tracks including Exorcist and The Bee for Kickin', Strictly Underground and Suburban Base. Ive been relistening to 'Roll The Beats' for a while now on old Jungle CDs and realised although I have about 10 copies of it, I never had it on plate!!! what a track this is, the breaks are so well layered, the filthy deep subs are stomach battering, and the track has loads of quality ragga vibes, great little eerie effects that punctuate throughout the track with MC Fats adding some great vocals to complete the package. 'Dub Plate Fever' is quite a laid back vibe that rolls nicely, again featuring great breaks that are chopped nicely without being to scatty and the bass is yet again deep and rumbling. I love the almost comedy "Jungle Jungle" vocal lick that is so typical of this period when the music didn't take itself too seriously. 'Floating Kill (Dirty Mix)' has a slightly different vibe choosing more R&B vocals samples along side the Ragga licks, its a little more uplifting, but blended with more skatty beats and a grimey sub that rumbles deep in the mix down of the track. The breaks also change up throughout the track which I love about it. A corking 3 tracker that is clearly a product of its time, but is still so playable and relevant.

Memories on this one - 1994 bagleys film sudios - Desire - the place was heaving with rudeboys - Hype enters main stage with a two paper spliff hanging out of his mouth with GQ in tow - kicks off his set with Roll Da Beats.......the place went fucking BANANAS!!!

DJ Hype is a genious. In this very special EP, he released some instant jungle hits, such as Roll Da Beats, and specially Dub Plate Fever. What few may know is that, on Dub Plate Fever, DJ Hype borrowed the horns and vocals from the original Dub classic "Promised Land", produced in 1979 by Aswad and sang by the Jamaican artist Dennis Brown. I heard once DJ Marky opening an Old School repertory on his Terremoto Radio Session on 97 FM with "Dub Plate Fever", it was really amazing. Honors the old times where such kind of tunes (Roll Da Beats and Dup Plate Fever among them) could be heard at places like Toco Club, Sound Factory and Overnight.
