Album
Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band is the name taken by Conor Oberst and his backing band, which is composed of Nik Freitas guitar, Taylor Hollingsworth guitar, Macey Taylor bass, Nate Walcott keyboardsorgan and Jason Boesel drums. The band was formed to back Oberst on his 2008 solo album but soon evolved into a band of its own with all members singing and providing songs for 2009's Outer South. Conor Oberst's Mystic Valley Band initially seemed a bit like a busman's holiday, a way for him to throw off whatever expectations he had as Bright Eyes, a way to get a bit loose and rowdy. This behavior is atypical for singersongwriters, but it fits the spirit of Outer South, an album written, recorded and about the road - a roadworn cliché that always gets reinvigorated whenever its executed with gusto, as it is here, partially due to Oberst spreading the wealth. Having three other singers here makes Outer South a bit messy, but it speaks to what makes the album work: it's about playing, not the song. Outer South. Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band. Released May 5, 2009. Outer South Tracklist. Slowly Oh So Slowly Lyrics. To all the Lights in the Windows Lyrics. Oberst made the album with a newly assembled cadre of players dubbed the Mystic Valley Band, yet it was still solely his name and mug on the cover and almost exclusively his voice and songs on the CD. A full subsuming of Oberst's personality would severely dilute his music's power, but Outer South seems to actually undo many of the beneficially humbling gains made by his last record. Unquestionably, there are dazzlers here, foremost the ripping power-popper Cabbage Town and the equally pleasing, jangly Spoiled, which cannily evokes the ramshackle charm of 1980s . and the Cure. Outer South is a decently stocked serving of rambling, saloon-joint alt-country, but one that finds the freewheeling Oberst and band in need of a little focus. Read full review. It mostly works: Shave a couple of the non-Conor tracks and it'd sit comfortably with his best. There is a reason that Oberst's single album with the Mystic Valley Band is largely forgotten today it's essentially because it is forgettable. After getting through this hour-plus record, only a small handful of the 16 tracks really did anything to stand out. White Shoes is really the only track feeling deserving of an Oberst bump and fitting of the singers talent, with a somber and focused sound throughout. Otherwise, songs like Snake Hill and Cabbage Town stood out but were more due to. read more. 10mo. Outer South might just be his most collaborative effort yet - it's stocked with songs written by his bandmates and the flow here isn't simpy Oberst's wounded phrasing, but the wide expanses drawn out by the band. He and the band are all over the place - rolling down the avenues on the raucous opener Slowly Oh So Slowly and invoking the ghosts of surreal poetry on the weary, Silver Jews-like Eagle On a Pole. But with 2008's self-titled album under his own name and this year's renewal with the Mystic Valley Band, Oberst has found a new avenue for his depth-defying folk-rock. The Mystic Valley Band is turning into something more - not quite a full-fledged multi-headed beast the way the Byrds were at their peak, but not Dylan pushing through the Rolling Thunder Revue as its undisputed leader, either.
