Skrillex, Doja Cat, and more: MTV's SnowGlobe Music Festival 2019 in 50 photo. Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt 5 May 1900 28 May 1973 was a German conductor and composer. After studying at several music academies, he worked in German opera houses between 1923 and 1945, first as a répétiteur and then in increasingly senior conducting posts, ending as Generalmusikdirektor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. After the Second World War Schmidt-Isserstedt was invited by the occupying British forces to form the Northwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, of which he was musical director and chief. Schmidt-Isserstedt's direction may not be not so imaginative or passionate like someone would urge from extra-popular works, but his balance between orchestral parts, the precision of attacks, the phrasing, the rightness of tempos, are hard to be matched among the most celebrated big-band versions the other fully satisfying cycle in this respect, to my taste, are Paul Kletzky's. Similarly, Wilhelm Backhaus's playing could appear at first hearing mechanical or lacking the sophisticated refinement of other pianists, but to my personal taste his interpretation is just so musical, flowing, convincing, and technically awesome. Beethoven: SymphoniesSchmidt-Isserstedt. Review by: Jed Distler. Artistic Quality: 8. Sound Quality: 8. Schmidt-Isserstedts straightforward, sober interpretations strike a happy medium between the formal, unvarnished Teutonic styles of Klemperer and Barenboim and the astringent classicism typical of Toscanini, Szell, and at times, Böhm. Standouts include a highly distinct, stylishly taut Eroica , an expansive, fluent Pastorale , an assertive, powerfully projected Fourth, and a Leonore No. 3 that positively sizzles with drama. Incidentally, in the latters first movement Backhaus plays a flashy cadenza inferior to Beethovens own. Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Wilhelm Backhaus. Backhaus certainly had heritage and was already a seasoned veteran performer to quote from a Gramophone reviewer by the time he began the first cycle, at the age of 64. Technically there are few surprises
